Indice Semiconductor has developed Predictive Lossless SwitchingTM, a highly efficient and low EMI controller for use with traditional Zero Voltage Switching.

Manufacturers using ICs with Predictive Lossless SwitchingTM (PLS) can benefit from all the advantages of Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) but without the inherent limitations, to produce smaller, more compact, more efficient and cheaper power systems.

ZVS has had limited use in high end power supply systems since the 1980s, allowing for operation at higher frequencies without the efficiency losses suffered due to switching. However, it has major limitations to its potential and effectiveness, which have prevented it from being utilized on a large scale.

The main drawback of ZVS is that it typically only allows for static control over timing of switching devices, such as dead times, active snubbers, or active resonant commutated poles (ARCP), which limits operation to narrow load bands.

Using Indice’s PLSTM controller, switching speed is increased to more than five times faster than that of a hard-switching system, and maintains perfect ZVS over the entire power range. This is because, as the name suggests, PLSTM is predictive, ensuring minimal losses by predicting and adjusting the sequence of switching events of the power circuit.

In fact, PLSTM reduces switching losses of half or full bridges by 80%, in insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), gallium nitrade (GaN), silicon MOSFETs and silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs. With PLSTM, IGBTs can switch at SiC and GaN hard-switching frequencies without the risk or the cost. When combined with wide bandgap devices, PLSTM can exceed megahertz frequencies.

PLSTM also reduces losses in self-resonant topologies such as LLC and push-pull systems, by optimising dead time over full input voltage and power range, raising CEC efficiency.

In contrast with traditional hard switching systems, PLSTM minimizes EMI by slowing edge speed while accelerating switching frequency over the entire power range.

Indice’s PLSTM is equivalent to a three level converter running at double the frequency with only two levels, eliminating half the switches and zero crossing control complexity, while using smaller output filters. It reduces power switch overshoot and stress, allowing less design overhead and cost.

In addition to working with all switching devices, PLSTM is also compatible with existing ARCP or snubber based topologies.

Indice’s PLSTM has a wide variety of applications including offline mains LED lighting, renewable energy generation, such as solar power inverters and wind farms, data centres and servers, whitegoods, air-conditioning units and electric motor control for electric vehicles, trucks, and trains, and generators.
